She had appeared from the porter's room, which was no bigger than a middle closet in which there was a bed, a small table and some shoulder straps were hanging there. Every day the porters changed, a different porter woman was on duty. But this one I saw the first time.

In St.Petersbourg and in Russia in general the knocks at the door can be dangerous, I thought. I wished to know who would be intercepting me at this late hour in the fasten room. When I opened the door I saw one of the women porters. I asked what the matter was it. "It's OK" she said and stopped for a minute. "Excuse me, but could I speak to you". "I think you've been working rather a long time. You must be very hungry. Would you like to have a cup of tea?" I was scared, not only because we were absolute strangers but also because I have met many women porters and came to the conclusion that the most of them had the soldier's brains and they are rather rough to people. Usually they are rather hard and suspicious to foreigners. I muttered something like: "It's not necessary". I was deeply immersed into my work.

I had almost forgotten about her when out if the blue she returned, not only with a cup of tea but with a whole tray of tasty things: a big gup of tea, three enormous sandwiches with pieces of sausage and cheese and some biscuits. I heard clear but rather unpracticed English language: "I put some cherries in your tea cup. We, Russians sometimes do it. Is that OK? "Do you put any marmalade in tea in America?" - She asked. "Yes, we do". I said. Realizing that she decided to sacrifice a part of her personal nighttime food, I thanked her a lot and invited her to be seated as my guest. I said her that her English was quite good.

She didn't want to intrude rudely and she went on to stand by the doorway of our room as we were having a chat. The told me that she used to work as a teacher, her social security is very small and she works here to add some money to her modest income. I told our names to each other. The name of this Russian woman was Tatiana Potapova. Then we shook our hands and went on our conversation as good friends. I expressed my thanks for her magnanimity and gave her some English books and magazines. Our first night meet showed the quality of Russian character. Their unusual warm and hospitality, and their love to give presents to somebody show the sincerity of their souls. As to the American travelers, they always can see in Russia something special what they can't see in America. For example Russian ladies... are simpler for negotiating to date. I would like to say that it is harder to hook an American lady in the street and to ask her to have a cup of coffee with you.
